Products - Polyester film (BOPET) and BOPP Films

Polyester film (BOPET) Polyester film commonly known as PET film is a versatile film, which has a vast range of applications. The film provides a strong barrier to moisture, odour and gases making it suitable for use in flexible packaging. Its high tensile strength, thermal and chemical stability makes it suitable for a multitude of applications in electric insulation, office supplies, graphic arts, magnetic media imaging, metallic yarn and industrial applications.

BOPP Films Polypropylene film commonly known as BOPP is widely used for food packaging, textile bags, overwraps for cigarette and personal products, adhesive tapes and labels. Its protective qualities (for odours, oxygen, and water vapour) and its shiny appearance make it a very attractive option in the flexible packaging market.

Both the above products have some peculiar differentiating properties that make them the favoured material for different industries. Below is a comparison of properties between BOPET and BOPP Films to reveal the difference in properties of both the products hence their use for different purposes:

BOPET FilmsBOPP Films
  • Costlier on the basis of usage area.

  • Better machinability in terms of higher speed in production.

  • Better printability but lamination is essential.

  • Higher gas retention properties make it suitable for packaging spices and other strongly flavoured food products.

  • Lower moisture retention properties.

  • Cannot be heat sealed unless it is laminated.

  • Higher tensile strength.

  • Difficult to recycle.

  • Cheaper than BOPET films.

  • Lower machinability but not a constraint with the improved packing machines.

  • Lower print quality but lamination is not required.

  • Lower gas retention properties.

  • Higher moisture retention properties have helped to replace wax paper for applications such as biscuit wrappers.

  • Heat sealable BOPP has been developed which can be sealed directly.

  • Lower tensile strength.

  • Easier to recycle.
